DAY 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro / Arusha Airport
Upon arrival, your private driver will transfer you to your accommodation for dinner and overnight. Your mountain guide will meet you at the lodge for a briefing and equipment check in preparation for the climb.
DAY 2: Arusha (1,400m) – Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,600m)
Hiking time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Montane forest
After hotel pickup, drive 4–5 hours to Rongai Gate for registration and climbing formalities. Begin your hike along a gentle trail through beautiful forest scenery. Camp overnight at Simba Camp (2,600m), which has a toilet and picnic tables. Water is available below the camp.
DAY 3: Simba Camp – Kikelewa Caves (3,450m)
Hiking time: 6–7 hrs | Distance: 8 km | Habitat: Moorland
Ascend steadily to the “Second Cave” with fantastic views of Kibo and the Eastern Ice Fields. After lunch, leave the main trail and cross the moorland towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Camp near Kikelewa Caves, surrounded by giant senecios. Dinner and overnight at camp.
DAY 4: Kikelewa Caves – Mawenzi Tarn
Hiking time: 3–4 hrs | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Heath zone
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes brings stunning views of the wilderness. Reach Mawenzi Tarn camp, spectacularly set beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area. Dinner and overnight at camp.
DAY 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,720m)
Hiking time: 5 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Alpine desert
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo on the eastern slopes, taking 4–5 hours to reach Kibo Hut. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Dinner and overnight at camp.
DAY 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking time: 8 hrs ascent / 7 hrs descent | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Scree & snow
Wake before midnight for the summit climb. Ascend via Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m) to Gillman’s Point (5,685m), then continue through snow to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to witness sunrise over Africa’s roof. Descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and brunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
DAY 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate (1,980m)
Hiking time: 7 hrs | Distance: 9 km | Habitat: Moorland & rainforest
After breakfast, descend past Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate. Sign the register and receive your summit certificate (green for Gillman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Celebrate with your mountain crew and enjoy lunch at the gate. Transfer to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, dinner, and overnight, or continue to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight.
