Overview
This 2-day adventure to Ol Doinyo Lengai is the most popular short package, combining a challenging night summit climb with the dramatic landscapes of Lake Natron.
The trek begins at midnight to avoid extreme heat, allowing climbers to reach the summit at sunrise with breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley. After the descent, enjoy time to relax and explore the surrounding area, including waterfalls and flamingo habitats.
Day 1: Arusha – Lake Natron
Driving Time: 6–8 hours
Depart early from Arusha and drive through the Maasai plains toward Lake Natron. The journey offers scenic views of the Rift Valley and remote landscapes.
Arrive in the afternoon and check in at a campsite or budget lodge. After lunch and rest, enjoy a short excursion to the lake or nearby waterfalls (Ngare Sero).
In the evening, have an early dinner and rest before your midnight climb.

Day 2: Summit – Lake Natron – Return to Arusha
Around midnight (12:00 AM), transfer to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai and begin the climb.
The ascent is steep and physically demanding, taking approximately 6–7 hours. Reach the summit at sunrise and enjoy panoramic views over Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley.
Descend carefully (4–5 hours) back to the base, then return to camp for breakfast and rest.
Afterward, begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon or evening.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is located in northern Tanzania near Lake Natron, within the Great Rift Valley, about 6–8 hours’ drive from Arusha.
The climb is very challenging. It involves:
Steep slopes (up to 45° incline)
Loose volcanic ash and rock
Long overnight hiking hours
It is considered one of the toughest short climbs in Tanzania.
