Overview
The 4 Days / 3 Nights Mount Meru Trek is the most popular and highly recommended option. It provides proper acclimatization, a steady pace, and a high summit success rate. The trek follows the Momella Route and includes overnight stays in mountain huts, with an armed ranger accompanying the group due to wildlife in the park.
Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Altitude: 1,500m → 2,500m
Distance: ~10 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
After breakfast, depart from Arusha and drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. After registration, begin your trek through open grasslands where wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, and zebras are commonly seen.
The trail gradually enters montane forest, offering chances to spot monkeys and birdlife. You will stop for lunch along the way before continuing to Miriakamba Hut.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Altitude: 2,500m → 3,570m
Distance: ~8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Today’s trek is shorter but steeper, moving from forest into moorland. The vegetation becomes thinner, and the views open up dramatically. Along the way, you will see the impressive Meru Crater and Ash Cone.
Arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch. In the afternoon, take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m), which helps prepare for summit day.
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Saddle Hut – Summit (Socialist Peak) – Miriakamba Hut
Altitude: 3,570m → 4,566m → 2,500m
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Wake up around midnight for your summit attempt. The trail follows a narrow ridge with stunning views of the crater and surrounding landscape. As you approach the summit, you may witness a spectacular sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro.
Reach Socialist Peak (4,566m), the highest point of Mount Meru, before descending back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and then continuing down to Miriakamba Hut.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Arusha
Altitude: 2,500m → 1,500m
